Have you ever asked yourself, “What happens when this life is over?” or “Will I go to heaven when I die?” You’re not alone—these are questions that stir many hearts. The good news is that God hasn’t left us in the dark. He’s given us His Word to light the way, and the answer is simpler than you might think.
One of the most cherished verses in Scripture, John 3:16, shows us how we can be certain of where we’re headed:
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
This single verse overflows with hope! Let’s break it down into three questions you can ask yourself to see if you’re on the path to heaven:
1. Do You Believe God Loves You—Truly Loves You?
God’s love isn’t just a comforting idea—it’s a fact, proven when He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to bear the punishment for our sins. You can’t earn this love with good works or effort; it’s a gift freely given to all—including you. Can you trust that God loves you personally? That Jesus gave His life so you could escape sin’s eternal cost?
2. Are You Resting Your Faith in Jesus Alone?
John 3:16 says it plain: “whosoever believeth in him” receives everlasting life. It’s not about being good enough, attending church, or keeping rules. Salvation comes through faith in Jesus—nothing more, nothing less. Jesus declared it Himself: “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6). So, what are you counting on to reach heaven—your own deeds, or Jesus?
3. Have You Been Born Again?
This verse confirms two destinies: perishing or everlasting life. Earlier in the chapter, Jesus told Nicodemus, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7). That might sound strange, but it’s about a new beginning—turning from your old ways and letting Jesus take the lead in your life. It’s not about religion or routines; it’s about having a personal relationship with Him. Has your heart been changed by meeting and receiving Jesus and your Lord, God, and Savior?
Pause and Look Within
The Bible urges us, “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves” (2 Corinthians 13:5). This isn’t to scare you—it’s to help you stand on sure footing. God’s promise is clear: salvation is a gift for anyone who reaches out to Jesus. “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13). Isn’t that wonderful to consider?
